The Roswell City Council has OK’d an ordinance allowing golf carts and other so-called personal transportation vehicles on some city streets — but don’t put the key in the ignition just yet.

The ordinance approved Monday night clears the way for travel on streets with speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less, on designated multi-use paths and in school zones. The carts will not be allowed on state and federal roads, on sidewalks and on roads with an adjacent multi-use path.

The ordinance becomes effective March 1.

The delay in enacting the law will allow for officials to work out a number of logistical details such as signage, and will give the city time to educate the public about the changes, said city spokeswoman Karen Zitomer.
