Roofs collapse in Atlanta, Norcross

Firefighters driving by a building in Gwinnett County Monday stopped and cleared a site after discovering that a portion of the roof had collapsed.

The incident occurred after 3 p.m. in the 6000 block of Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, at Veridian Business Park, according to a statement issued by Capt. Tommy Rutledge, a spokesman with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

It was at least the second roof collapse of the day in metro Atlanta.

Another building in northwest Atlanta crumbled, apparently from the weight of water on the roof, according to the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department. But that building, at the intersection of Marietta Street and Northside Drive, was vacant. No one was injured there, either.

In the Norcross building, several employees were working to clear items from offices, hours after the 7:30 a.m. collapse, Rutledge said. The remaining portion of the sagging roof was "extremely dangerous" for the occupants, he said.

No one was injured. A Norcross code enforcement officer assessed the damage and posted a "Do Not Enter" notice on the building, Rutledge said.
