Restaurant inspection: Food not properly protected at Top Spice

The health score of Top Spice @ Akers Mill recently fell because some foods were not being protected from potential contamination.

The Cobb County health inspector said raw ground chicken was directly on top of a container of mango sauce in the walk-in cooler. In another cooler, raw eggs were found in a container with celery and baby corn. Other eggs were stored next to a container of lettuce.

In addition, numerous containers of meats, vegetables, sauces and spices had been stored uncovered and subject to contamination in prep coolers and underneath counters.

The health score of Top Spice Thai & Malaysia Restaurant, 2997 Cobb Parkway, Atlanta, dropped from a 93/A to a 68/U.

In other violations, foods were being prepped in the wrong sinks. Noodles were rinsed and prepared in a sink designated for meats only. And raw chicken was prepared in a sink set aside for fruits and vegetables.

When the inspector pointed out the error, the foods were removed and the sinks sanitized.

Points were also taken off because two cutting boards for raw chicken had not been sanitized before storing away. Raw eggs left out of refrigeration were no longer at a safe temperature and were discarded. Prepared meats had not been date-marked for disposal. And numerous containers of spices, sauces and oils were not labeled.

Top Spice will be re-inspected.

In other news, a recently featured restaurant from DeKalb County, Mina’s West African Caribbean Cuisine & Bar, 5439 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, scored 83/B on a follow-up inspection.
