Prepared salads being served for lunch were at unsafe temperatures and some were not being protected from contamination during a recent health inspection at Cozy Corner Cafe II in Sandy Springs.

Chicken salad was at an elevated temperature inside a cooler that was not even turned on, according to the inspection report. And tuna salad at a self-service salad bar was not being cooled properly over ice.

The Fulton County inspector said when the cooler was turned on at 11 a.m. it already had food inside. Air temperature was 60 degrees inside the cooler, according to the report.

In addition, the self-serve salad bar was not set up adequately for cold foods, the inspector said. The container of tuna salad was not submerged in the ice being used as a coolant.

Points were also taken off because employees were prepping raw chicken and pasta salad on the same table. And personal items were being stored with the customer food.

Cozy Corner Cafe II, 6190 Powers Ferry Road, failed the inspection with a 50/U, dropping from previous scores of 92/A and 94/A.

In other code violations, raw eggs were being stored above ready-to-eat foods. Discard dates were missing from stored foods. Chemicals were being stored in the same areas as the food.

Points were also taken off because dishes were in the mop sink, cardboard boxes were being used as storage containers, and the floors under and behind the kitchen equipment needed cleaning.

Cozy Corner Cafe II will be re-inspected. [Editor's Note: Cozy Corner Cafe II passed the follow-up inspection with 98/A.]
