Crossover Day has come and gone for the Georgia General Assembly, and legislation that would have made two Cobb clerk of court posts nonpartisan failed to make it out of the lower chamber.
The bills, 467 and 468, did not come up for a vote in the House of Representatives by March 7, the date in which bills must pass either the House or Senate if they are to be considered for approval during the legislative session.
State Rep. John Carson of Marietta, was the chief sponsor of the bills, which would have required the clerks of superior and state court qualify to run in nonpartisan races.
Carson, a Republican, also sponsored House Bills 284 and 285, which would make the Cobb probate and chief magistrate court positions nonpartisan. Those two bills passed the State House in February and are pending in the Senate.
Carson previously told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his bills were filed at the request of Cobb Magistrate Court Judge Joyette Holmes, Chief Probate Court Judge Kelli Wolk, Clerk of Superior Court Rebecca Keaton and Clerk of State Court Angie Davis — all Republicans.
The proposals received criticism from some Democrats, who said Republicans are now only considering the issue because Democratic candidates are starting to make inroads in the county.
