A 42-year-old woman apparently hanged herself with a phone cord in the Doraville jail.

Vera S. Andel, of Sandy Springs, was found unconscious in her cell just after 7 p.m. Monday, said Officer Gene Callaway, a police spokesman. Paramedics could not revive her.

Andel had been arrested on disorderly conduct and public intoxication charges.

Doraville police are investigating the apparent suicide and will forward their conclusions to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office.

Police issued a press release Thursday after reaching Andel's family on Wednesday.

Also Wednesday, a 46-year-old Marietta woman strangled herself in a Smyrna holding cell. Barbara Hall, who also was being held on disorderly conduct and public intoxication charges, was found in the cell early Wednesday morning.

That incident also is under investigation.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
