A suspect is in custody after a Doraville man was struck and killed with a cinder block Saturday morning, police say.

Oscar Martinez was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death after confessing to killing Jose Rivas-Mejia, police said.

Rivas-Mejia’s body was found behind a shopping center at 3245 Chamblee Dunwoody Road in Chamblee with a head wound, Chamblee Police Chief Marc Johnson said.

“The victim appeared to have suffered a blow to the head with a cement block and died at the scene,” Johnson said.

Investigators viewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses that showed Rivas-Mejia, 47, with two other men in the area where his body was found sometime early Saturday morning, police said.

Police used the video to find the two men later that day and question them, Johnson said.

“Martinez … gave a full confession and also said that the other individual with him was not involved,” Johnson said.

Martinez was booked into the DeKalb County jail on Sunday morning on murder and obstruction charges.
