Piedmont Healthcare CEO Timothy Stack died Monday at the age of 60.

Stack took over as head of Piedmont -- one of metro Atlanta's largest health systems -- in December 2001. He grew the organization from two hospitals and eight physician practices to a $1.6 billion operation.

Today, the health system boasts five hospitals, more than 50 primary care and specialty physician practices and a 900-member physician network. Stack was also integral to the creation of the Piedmont Heart Institute, which employs more than 100 cardiovascular experts.

"Tim was a remarkable father, husband and friend, and a courageous leader for our organization," said Patrick Battey, chair of Piedmont's board of directors.

Greg Hurst, Piedmont's president of finance and development, will continue to handle CEO duties, which he has done since Stack took medical leave in early June. A Piedmont spokeswoman declined to disclose the executive's illness.
