Shortly after a Chevrolet Impala got a flat tire on I-285 early Wednesday, an SUV crashed into it with such force, the vehicle burst into flames and someone still inside the Impala died, Atlanta police said.

The SUV, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, also struck a Chevrolet Suburban, police Officer Kim Jones said.

The fiery crash, which occurred about 1:10 a.m. on I-285 near Jonesboro Road in southeast Atlanta, prompted authorities to close the interstate. Lanes have since reopened.

The driver of the Jeep and the two occupants of the Chevrolet were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim’s body was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.

Officials have not determined if criminal charges will be filed.
