A fire Thursday at a single-family home in Decatur appears to have destroyed most of the structure at 615 South McDonough Street, roughly 50 yards south of the Wylde’s Center Oakhurst Garden.

No one was injured according to Deputy Fire Chief Stephanie Harpring. The homeowners were apparently out of town, although the house was occupied. The fire was detected late Thursday afternoon by a passerby who saw smoke spewing from the attic.

Ten firefighters extinguished the blaze although hot spots were still getting treated late into the night. Harpring said the house suffered “significant damage,” but wouldn’t know more until she’d actually been inside and completed her investigation.

She doesn’t think arson was a factor although it’s too early to give a definitive pronouncement.

The home, in one of the city’s older neighborhoods, appears to have been built in the 1920s. Harpring, who was on site throughout the fire, said the last single-family home fire she remembers was two years ago on nearby West Benson Street. She said that she couldn’t remember the last house fire before West Benson.

The fire occurred slightly more than a half mile from the city’s Fire Station No. 2.
