January is Cervical Cancer Awareness month and a locally-based nonprofit is seeking community support.
The Spirit Foundation, founded by Dr. Lisa Flowers, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University School of Medicine and clinician at Grady Memorial Hospital, hosts its annual fitness event.
Called “Shake It For A Cure Zumbathon,” it’s a high-energy, fun, Latin dance-based, calorie burning, cardio workout. The event takes place 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Champagne Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel - Northlake, 4156 LaVista Road, Atlanta. Admission is $20 and all proceeds go towards providing free colposcopy services for patients through the Mercy Care Chamblee Clinic in DeKalb County.
Additional funding and resources raised by the Spirit Foundation will be used to:
- Donate equipment to expand cervical cancer screening, detection, and treatment in the Mercy Care System
- Contribute healthcare providers to perform the procedures to treat the patients
- HPV screening and cervical cancer health care and awareness.
There will be multiple Zumba instructors throughout the morning to keep the energy flowing and the vibe fresh. Participants are welcomed to stay for the duration or just for a set or two.
