A Newton County teacher has been placed on leave after being arrested on drug and alcohol charges in Rockdale County.
Kathern Laura Green, a language arts teacher at Newton County High School, was charged April 21 with DUI, possession of cocaine, failure to maintain lane and open container, according to Rockdale County jail records.
Green, 36, of Oxford, was stopped after a Rockdale County deputy clocked her 1998 Ford Explorer at 59 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to an incident report obtained by the Newton Citizen. The report also stated that Green veered off the road onto the shoulder after turning onto Ga. Highway 138, the newspaper said.
Green denied she had been drinking but registered a .14 on a portable blood alcohol sensor and was arrested, the report stated. Georgia's legal limit for DUI is .08
The arresting deputy also reported finding a cup of red wine and a plastic bag containing about 2 grams of powder cocaine in her vehicle, the newspaper said.
Green was held for three days in the Rockdale County jail before being released, jail records indicated.
Sherri Davis-Viniard, spokeswoman for Newton County schools, told the AJC Monday that Green has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation. She said Green has been at Newton County High since 2006.
