Answers
1. C. Safety concerns raised by the Federal Transit Administration earlier this month delayed the launch of the Atlanta Streetcar system again. Mayor Kasim Reed said those issues have since been addressed and is asking state and federal officials to allow the transit service to begin Dec. 6 instead of mid-November.
2. B. The Clayton County Sheriff's Office announced last week it will no longer comply with requests from the federal government to hold detainees beyond their scheduled release dates so they can face deportation. The office's new policy applies to detainers, which are requests for jails to hold people for an additional 48 hours —- excluding weekends and holidays —- after they would otherwise be released. This gives U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement time to take custody of them and attempt to deport them.
3. A. Redan High School's head basketball coach Dannie Love passed away unexpectedly in his sleep last week from unknown causes. Love, 40, had just started his first year as the head coach at Redan. He transferred from Stone Mountain High School, where he coached the junior varsity basketball team.
4. D. Gwinnett County leaders last week approved a massive movie studio project that will include a college, a hotel, offices and housing. The location, at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and I-85, is the site of the fiber optic cable company OFS, which at one time employed 5,000 people, but now has several hundred. That company will continue to operate on the site.
5. B. Kroger officials are quietly hoping the 'Murder Kroger' moniker that informally stuck to the store at 725 Ponce de Leon Ave. after the killing of a woman in its parking lot in the 1990s will become better known as the Beltline Kroger. That makes sense, as nicknames go, considering the proximity of the store to the nearby Beltline, a network of parks, trails and transit being developed on a 22-mile former railroad corridor circling Atlanta's intown neighborhoods.
