1. C. Deal proposed $547 million more in k-12 school funding next year. About $200 million of that would merely fund growth in student enrollment, but $315 million would go to shore up local budgets. School districts can choose raises, smaller classes, more school days or other ways to spend the money.
The governor also said teachers who have been forced to take days off without pay will, in a sense, get a pay raise if school districts end furloughs.
The state has not offered teachers and most state employees cost-of-living raises since the start of the Great Recession.
2. B. DirecTV’s 20 million users last week lost access to Atlanta-based The Weather Channel in a contentious dispute over how much the satellite carrier is willing to pay to air the network.
The Weather Channel CEO David Kenny said this is the first time in the network’s 32-year history that it has had a significant disruption due to a failure to reach an agreement with a carrier. SNL Kagan, a company that analyzes media industry finances, estimates DirecTV pays a modest 13 cents per subscriber per month to The Weather Channel, or about $2.6 million. That is far lower than the amount for more popular networks such as USA and ESPN.
3. A. Crittenton, who was supposed to be on a 12-hour curfew while on bond awaiting a murder trial, was arrested Jan. 15 in a drug sting that hit more than a dozen people, authorities said. He has been linked to an extensive narcotics trafficking operation based in Atlanta and faces felony drug-possession charges, prosecutors said.
4. C. Marietta-based WellStar Health Systems landed for the first time on this year’s Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list. WellStar, which ranks No. 39, joined three other Georgia companies making the list: Atlanta-based law firm Alston & Bird (40); Atlanta-based Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (43); and Columbus-based insurer Aflac (58). One perk for the more than 19,000 employees is a concierge service that will take their vehicles in for an oil change, arrange for someone to feed their pet or run errands for them.
5. D. Shoney’s opened its first in-mall restaurant recently at Sugarloaf Mills in Lawrenceville. Another first will be full liquor service, the company said. Shoney’s is considered a family-style restaurant, competing with IHOP, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Denny’s, and Waffle House in metro Atlanta. Shoney’s has 165 restaurants in 16 states, including five in metro Atlanta. The restaurant category is typically defined by checks below $12 and limited or no alcohol service.
