Starting next school year, Fayette County will phase in new standards-based report cards for elementary students. The new system, which was approved by the Board of Education on Feb. 26, will replace letter grades in broad categories with more specific analyses of individual skills.

A committee of teachers and administrators recommended the change after a recent survey showed that 76 percent of elementary teachers think the current report cards do not effectively communicate student mastery of standards to parents. Standards-based report cards are designed to better align instruction, assessment and grading practices, and to more clearly define student progress.
