A large, recently built home near the Brookhaven area of DeKalb County was gutted by an early Tuesday fire.

The fire broke out before daybreak in the home, which was about 3,500 to 4,000 square feet and located in the Reserve at Brookleigh subdivision on Brookleigh Lane.

“On arrival, we found a large portion on the back side on fire,” DeKalb fire Battalion Chief William Voorhies told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The deck was on fire and it had gotten into the structure. We had fire from the roof.”

Voorhies said the owner was home when the fire started.

“She got out prior to our arrival, but we weren’t able to locate her and confirm that during the first few minutes,” he said.

No injuries were reported, but firefighters had their hands full keeping the fire from spreading to other nearby homes, according to Voorhies.

“We had serious exposure issues on the left and right side of the house that was involved,” he said. “Fortunately, we didn’t have any damage to those homes.

Voorhies said the home that burned was “brand new, [built] within the last year.”
