After 17 months construction DeKalb County’s new fire station No. 3 in Avondale Estates will open next month, with the crew moving in Nov. 2 and a ribbon cutting set for one week later.
The 11,500 square foot, three-bay station sleeps 12 firefighters, although the typical staff will be four-to-six persons. The facility features a full-sized commercial kitchen, crew day room, dining room, decontamination room, crew meeting room and a captain’s office.
Work on the $1.9 million station began in May, 2014, replacing the 1947 station built on the same site.
In April, 2014, only two weeks after firefighters moved out of the old station, the city suffered one of its worst residential fires in history when a 5,624 square-foot home burned to the ground killing Tami Willadsen and her 10-year-old daughter Jess. The Willadsen home was only 0.8 miles from the then-abandoned Avondale station.
For the last year-and-half, the No. 3 staff has worked out of the old DeKalb County police headquarters on Camp Circle.
