The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 to replace the nepotism policy, now allowing family members to be employed by the county with certain conditions.

The new policy allows “the employment of relatives in County departments where employment can be accommodated in a separate chain of command, work location or shift,” said Cobb County Human Resources Director Tony Hagler.

Since some smaller departments may not be able to make those accommodations, the new policy “provides procedures for management discretion in resolving those circumstances where employment of relatives cannot be accomplished,” he added.

Family members are defined by the county nepotism policy as “a spouse, child, parent, brother, sister, step-parent, stepchild, step-sibling, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, half-brother, half-sister, mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law or daughter-in-law,” including those who are adopted.

Cobb Commission Chairman Mike Boyce said Tuesday this change is “monumental,” showing “we look at our employees as people” who no longer have to be “sneaking around.”
