Some 33,000 inmates are taken to the DeKalb County jail each year, with many staying for extended periods, leading family members wondering how to visit.

Here’s what you need to know, according to the jail:

  • Visits at the DeKalb jail are by video, but you can still come to the jail to do it. "At-home" sessions, where you use a webcam from somewhere other than the jail, are also offered.
  • At-home sessions do not count against an inmate's on-site visitation allowance, but costs $5 for 30 minutes. More information on at-home visits can be found by calling 1-877-578-3658 or clicking here.
  • Inmates can visit with friends and family up to thirty minutes per visit, two times per week at the jail.
  • Visitations are by appointment only and must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance. Make an appointment online here or by calling 404-298-8219.
  • All visitors must be on the inmate's approved visitation list.
  • Visitation hours are: 8 to 11:45 a.m. and 4 to 9:50 p.m.
  • Inmates housed on 8NE Pod 400 and 3SW Pod 200 housing units are not allowed on-site or at-home video visitation.
  • All visitors must identify themselves to corrections staff with valid government ID, including an official driver's license, state-issued identification card or military identification.
  • Dress code: Anything that you could legally wear in public. What about other Georgia jails? You can find their dress codes here.
