A Gwinnett County murder case ended in a mistrial Wednesday afternoon after a jury could not reach a verdict on some of the charges, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Sherwin Johnson, 38, acted as his own attorney in the case and had previously represented himself before the Georgia Supreme Court.

Johnson was convicted of two drug charges and two aggravated assault charges, but the jury could not agree on the remaining four charges, including felony murder. It was not immediately clear Wednesday afternoon if Johnson would be re-tried.

Johnson was first charged in 2014 in connection with the death of 23-year-old Kevin Pierre. Johnson and Quinton Hall got into a verbal argument at a Norcross apartment complex, which escalated to physical violence, Gwinnett County police said at the time. Eventually, shots were fired, hitting Pierre, who was not involved in the dispute. Pierre’s body was found in a wooded area about an hour after the 11:15 p.m. shooting, police said.

Johnson disputed the story police told, arguing to the Georgia Supreme Court that there was “no substantial evidence” to arrest him and that warrants “contained false information and had a blatant disregard for the truth.” His effort to get the charges dismissed was unsuccessful.

Sentencing information for the charges Johnson was convicted of was not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.
