Georgia Supreme Court Justice George Carley formally served notice Monday to Gov. Nathan Deal that he intends to resign on July 17.

Carley also asked Deal to appoint him to be a senior appellate court judge so he can to continue to consider motions filed in cases that were decided by the court when he was still an active justice and also because he hopes to serve as a senior judge in other courts after his retirement. Last year, the court's justices voted to allow Carley to serve as chief justice for two months this year before he steps down from the bench. BILL RANKIN

The Atlanta-based Carter Center announced Monday it received $40 million in donations to fight Guinea worm disease.

The donations were made by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates , and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation. The funds will help end Guinea worm disease by 2015.

The Carter Center, which has been leading the fight to eradicate the disease in 1986, said preliminary results show only 1,060 cases of Guinea worm occurred globally in 2011.

The 2011 cases occurred in three endemic nations – Ethiopia, Mali and South Sudan, according to the Carter Center. There was also an isolated outbreak in Chad. SHELIA POOLE

An Illinois man recently pleaded guilty to mailing threats to metro area schools in hopes of getting law enforcement to begin investigating individuals the man disliked, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Valtrez Stewart, 29, mailed threats early last year to Northview High School, Marietta High School, Stephenson Middle School and Meadowcreek High School, prosecutors said.

The notes warned that a bomb would detonate at a school or that people would be killed if money was not paid to certain individuals by a certain deadline.

Stewart is to be sentenced March 28. BILL RANKIN
