The state’s agricultural commissioner said Monday that he will soon begin studying whether Georgia can legally create its own guest-worker program.

Agricultural Commissioner Gary Black said his department will consult with officials in Utah, which enacted a law this year to allow illegal immigrants to get permits to work there.

House Bill 87, an immigration measure that the General Assembly approved last week, calls for Black to conduct such a study. Gov. Nathan Deal has said he intends to sign the bill.

HB 87 also would require Black’s department to study immigration’s impact on the state’s agricultural industry and “the need for reform” of the federal H-2A guest-worker program. Under HB 87, the report would be due to Deal and state lawmakers by Jan. 1. JEREMY REDMON
