A transplant surgeon performed the first robotic removal of a donor kidney in Georgia on Nov. 18 at Piedmont Hospital.

The robotic procedure allows for smaller incisions, which mean less pain for the donor, and the patient can choose where the extraction incision is placed so it’s less visible. For surgeons, it offers greater precision control to limit trauma to the donated kidney. The procedure also means shorter recovery times.
