Kennesaw police are investigating the death of a five-month-old girl who died after being left in a parked car for over five hours Wednesday.

A family member apparently forgot the child was asleep in a car seat when she went to work at the Ivy Hall Day School on Tuscan Heights Boulevard Wednesday afternoon, Kennesaw police spokesman Scott Luther said.

"Several hours later, the baby was found unresponsive inside the car and after attempts to revive her, she was pronounced deceased at the incident location," Luther said.

The high temperature in Kennesaw Wednesday afternoon was 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Police are still investigating and have not released names of the child or relative. MIKE MORRIS

A Starling Elementary School parent was arrested recently on several charges, including felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer and criminal trespass, after she came to see her child’s Field Day competition, ignoring school edicts to stay off campus.

Patricia Swilley was released on bond from Gwinnett Detention Center late Wednesday. Gwinnett Schools officials said she had been sent two criminal trespass warnings informing her not to come to the Grayson school because she had repeatedly violated visitation rules.

Swilley came to Field Day anyway and a scuffle ensued as police tried to arrest her when she refused to leave, said Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for Gwinnett Schools.

A police mugshot of Swilley showed her with a bloodied lip.

Swilley had appealed to Gwinnett school board members that she needed help during public comment at the monthly board meeting. She said her daughter was having trouble at Starling. Swilley also said she had had problems with the staff, but still wanted to attend school events.D.AILEEN DODD

Armstrong Atlantic State University received a grant worth $870,000 to recruit Latino students and help them succeed once they attend the Savannah campus.

It is the third grant the college has received from the Goizueta Foundation. The Atlanta-based organization supports similar efforts at colleges around the state. AASU has received about $1.9 million from the group since 2003.

The latest grant will provide needs-based scholarships and support a pilot program to improve graduation rates among these students. LAURA DIAMOND
