What's the most innovative idea you've tried in your classroom?

Every year we are introduced to ‘new’ and ‘innovative’ ideas for improving our classrooms. After 16 years, I still believe the best idea is to get to know your kids, make them look forward to your class, and communicate with their parents.

Tell us about the best teacher you ever had and what made them special?

Dr. Murray Siegel was my high school calculus teacher at Pope High School. He is a great inspiration and motivator. Twenty-plus years later, Dr. Siegel and I still keep in touch with regular phone calls.  He is special because he has always made me feel special.

What can parents do to prepare their children for learning?

Support all schools. Support all classrooms. Support all teachers. Support all children. Show your children that SCHOOL is your top priority!! The best advice I have for parents is to demonstrate the power of an education.

What are the obstacles to getting all kids to achieve?

Many students come into a math classroom with lots of apprehension. Math teachers often need to help students overcome simple fear of the subject in order to meet with success.

Do you know a metro Atlanta teacher or college professor that would be good to feature in this column:? Send your nomination and the educator's contact information to ednotes@ajc.com. We also need a high resolution jpeg photo of the teacher.
