MARTA to vote Monday on reinstating Braves shuttle

MARTA's board of directors is set to vote Monday on restoring the popular Braves shuttle.

A budget crisis forced the transit agency to axe the shuttle, which runs from Underground Atlanta to Turner Field, following the 2010 baseball season. But public outcry -- and prodding from Mayor Kasim Reed -- has led MARTA, which held five public hearings over the last week, to reconsider that decision.

MARTA will also decide whether to bolster the frequency of some bus routes, spokesman Lyle Harris said. Those include Routes 2 on Ponce de Leon and Moreland avenues, 87 on Roswell Road, 99 on Boulevard and 181 on Buffington Road.

The board's vote will follow two committee meetings scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday. If the proposal is approved, the Braves shuttle would be reinstated in time for the first regular season game on April 8. But fans will notice some changes, according to MARTA, which notes the new shuttle service would run less frequently, use fewer buses and operate on a shortened schedule.

Citizens can submit comments on the proposal through 9 a.m. Monday by calling 404-848-5299 or completing a comment card online at www.itsmarta.com. You can also fax your input to 404-848-4179.
