The 21-year-old man who jumped from the Pleasant Hill Road overpass and landed 23 feet below on I-85 is expected to survive, Gwinnett County police said Tuesday.

Police, however, have not determined if the Lawrenceville man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, Cpl. Jake Smith told the AJC.

The man jumped from the overpass onto the southbound lanes of I-85 during the Monday evening commute. Somehow he wasn't hit by any vehicles once he hit the concrete, Smith said.

The AJC is not naming the man because he was attempting suicide.

The man was on a bicycle but got off when he noticed a Gwinnett police patrol car nearby, according to the incident report obtained by the AJC. After leaning his bike against the guard rail, he put both legs over and let go, the report states.

When the officer reached the man on I-85 below, he used his patrol car to block other vehicles from striking the man, police said. The jumper was initially unconscious, but then opened his eyes and was moaning, according to the first responding officer.

The officer asked the man in Spanish whether he wanted to live , and the man replied, "No, no mas," Spanish for "no more."

Several lanes of I-85 were temporarily closed during the investigation Monday evening.
