A man was arrested in Suwanee 16 years after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child in New Jersey.

Jorge Cerezo, now 44, was charged with sexually assaulting a female child family member in a Burlington County, New Jersey hotel room in July 2001, police said. There were two other children in the hotel room when the assault occurred, and one was able to escape the room and call police.

Cerezo was convicted of aggravated sexual assault in 2002 but fled New Jersey before sentencing. Authorities initially believed that Cerezo had fled to Mexico, Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield said in a release.

A Burlington County detective discovered that Cerezo was still in the U.S. and identified persons of interest who helped police locate Cerezo in Suwanee. It is unclear how long he was living in Suwanee.

Cerezo was arrested by the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department’s Fugitive Unit, U.S. Marshalls and the New Jersey State Police in Suwanee on Thursday.

He is being held in the Burlington County Detention Center in Mt. Holly, New Jersey and has been charged with bail jumping. He will also be sentenced for the 2002 sexual assault conviction.
