A Marietta man has been arrested in Florida and charged with assault and robbery in the carjacking of a woman at a Target store on Cobb Parkway last Friday.
Sly Deon Sampson, 34, is being held in a Hillsborough County, Fla., jail and will be returned to Marietta to face charges. He was caught after Florida police conducted a sting operation involving a prostitute with whom Sampson was associated, police said.
Authorities say on June 10 Sampson assaulted and robbed a woman as she was taking her child out of the back seat of her 2004 Chevy Tahoe at a Target store parking lot in the 2200 block of South Cobb Parkway. The woman and child escaped as Sampson drove away in her vehicle, Marietta police said.
Within an hour of the carjacking, Marietta police discovered that the victim’s credit cards were being used to advertise adult entertainment escort services in the Atlanta area on an adult website. The woman advertising the services was Ahlai Diana Woodward, 19, of Marietta, an associate of Sampson, police say.
On Thursday night, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office identified the stolen 2004 Chevy Tahoe during a traffic stop. Woodward was in the car along the driver, Everton McCoy, 23, of Marietta, who was arrested. Woodward, however, was released, police said.
Marietta and Florida police decided to use Woodward to get to Sampson. When Woodward began advertising her services in the Tampa area, cops say, they conducted a prostitution sting using the information Woodward had posted on the Internet and arrested Woodward. Sampson was with her in Tampa during the operation and also arrested, Marietta police said.
