Officials are calling a two-alarm fire that tore through a Stone Mountain apartment building "suspicious."

The blaze Tuesday at Liberty Landing in Stone Mountain displaced about 10 families and sent two firefighters to the hospital.

"We responded to that building about a week ago on an attempted arson fire that didn't get going," William Smith, deputy chief of operations for DeKalb County Fire and Rescue, told the AJC on Wednesday. "They didn't know what they were doing. [This one] is definitely suspicious."

A wall collapsed on two firefighters as they searched for pockets of fire. They were kept overnight at the hospital with "minor injuries," Smith said. One will be released Wednesday, and the other will be released no later than Thursday, Smith said.

There were no injuries among the residents, Smith said. Liberty Landing managers relocated all the affected families to vacant units in the complex, Smith said.

The fire began on the middle floor "and burned up and spread horizontally from there," Smith said.

"We suspect it probably had some [intentional] involvement, but we're not sure until we get the samples back," he said.
