Five children of Gwinnett County law enforcement officers are getting a little help to continue their educations.
The Gwinnett County Police Department announced Tuesday the recipients of its annual police foundation scholarships, which are awarded to employees' children based on "their scholastic achievement and other criteria."
This year's recipients are:
• Dyanna Hodge, Officer Jerry Everett Memorial Education Scholarship
• Sydney Chassion, Officer Ralph Davis Memorial Education Scholarship
• Aska N. Hughes, Officer Jessee Gravitt Memorial Education Scholarship
• Mitchell A. Veasey, Officer Chris Magill Memorial Education Scholarship
• Caroline L. Sutton, Dartha Ferguson Memorial Education Scholarship
Everett, Davis and Gravitt were GCPD officers murdered in the line of duty in 1964. Magill, also a Gwinnett officer, was hit and killed by a drunk driver in 1993. The Jimmy Carter Boulevard bridge over I-85 is named in his honor.
Ferguson was a longtime Gwinnett County educator who also has a Duluth middle school named in her honor.
