It’s almost done.

After more than a year of work and about $20 million, the I-75 overpass at Windy Hill Road is scheduled for its last round of closures this weekend.

Crews will close the bridge at 9 p.m. Friday to pave and stripe the new interchange, and open the newly finished bridge by 5 a.m. Monday.

Drivers will have access to ramps, allowing them to turn right onto Windy Hill Road. Detour information will be posted, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.

The diverging diamond interchange, or DDI, shifts traffic to the opposite side of the bridge on both sides and eliminates the need for a left turn signal onto I-75.

A few weeks ago, crews permanently set the new traffic pattern, so workers this weekend and for the last couple weekends have just been wrapping up and doing cosmetic work.

Traffic officials warn the diverging diamond will take a bit of getting used to and might feel like you’re driving on the wrong side of the road.

The five-part Windy Hill project spans the less than two-mile stretch from Cobb Parkway and Powers Ferry Road and is expected to cost $48 million in all.  Construction began in October 2014.

Drivers are concerned about the area around one of the biggest construction zones in the metro area.

This $20 million phase was funded by the 2011 SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax), the Cumberland Community Improvement District, Georgia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and State Road and Tollway Authority.
