DeKalb County commissioners have approved applications for a mixed-use development, anchored by a 365 by Whole Foods Market, near Decatur.

North Decatur Square will also have nearly 55,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, and 300 multifamily residential units at North Decatur Road and Church Street. With construction slated to start in January, the project is expected to open in late 2018.

Commissioner Sharon Barnes-Sutton praised Tuesday’s the unanimous vote.

“Do you think DeKalb County is now open for business? I do and it’s open tonight” the commissioner, who represents the area, said in a news release this week.

The Whole Foods 365 is a smaller model with lower prices than traditional Whole Foods Market locations.

The project, which sits near DeKalb Medical Center's main hospital, is one of the latest to be aided by tax breaks meant to lure business to the county. The Decide DeKalb Development Authority approved more than $1.8 million North Decatur Square.

The developer, S.J. Collins Enterprises, has said the 18-acre project will create 325 jobs with a private investment of more than $100 million, Barnes-Sutton added.
