Registration is open for the 22nd annual Komen Atlanta Race for the Cure 5K run/walk and one mile walk, which will be held May 12 at Atlantic Station.

Officials expect more than 18,000 people to participate in the event, which is a major fundraiser for the organization. Last year, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta Affiliate raised $1.7 million to fight breast cancer, which is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women.

Executive Director Kelly Dolan said registration is running on par with last year's despite the recent controversy over the national office of Susan G. Komen for the Cure deciding to pull -- then restore -- funding to Planned Parenthood.

"I think it's died down," Dolan said. She said the Atlanta affiliate makes its own funding decisions and most of the money stays local. "I think people understand that and the importance of our work." She said the affiliate soon plans to award $2.2 million to 22 local breast health screening and education programs during its fiscal year.

Those interested in participating in the May event pay a $30 registration fee, which is available until April 21. It increases to $35 for adults after that date until the day of the run. Registration for children is $20.

People can register online through May 9. To register online, go to race.komenatlanta.org. For further information call 404-459-8700.
