One passenger was killed and two other people injured in a wreck Friday afternoon in Cherokee County.

Barry Allen Freeman, 23, of Adairsville, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

He was riding in the backseat of a four-door Saturn that collided with a tractor-trailer on Ga. 20 near Canton, Tim Cavender with the Cherokee County fire department said.

The 29-year-old driver, Richard Bagley of Cartersville, was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The front-seat passenger, 37-year-old Matthew Wilcox of Cartersville, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, Cavender said.

Investigators believe the Saturn was struck after attempting a U-turn in front of the tractor-trailer, according to Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Both the Saturn and tractor-trailer had been traveling eastbound on Ga. 20, also known as Knox Bridge Highway, when the Saturn was hit and knocked off the roadway.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Brian Moore, 33, of Jackson, was not injured, police said. He will not be charged with any traffic violations, Baker said.

Ga. 20 was temporarily closed in both directions in the Sutallee area, Cavender said.

The investigation is continuing.
