Kelly Burke, a Woodstock High School science teacher, was selected “Teacher of the Year” for the Cherokee County school district.
Superintendent Frank R. Petruzielo made the announcement Thursday during a surprise visit to one of Burke’s Advanced Placement physics classes.
Community leaders selected Burke because of her teaching gifts and her enthusiasm, said school system spokesman Mike McGowan. “The 22-year classroom veteran has a natural gift for transferring her love of science and learning to students,” he said.
Burke has been at Woodstock High for 12 years. She teaches AP physics to 11th- and 12th-graders, and is chair of the science department.
She has a National Board Certification in Adolescent and Young Adulthood Science, and last summer was one of four educators nationwide selected to work in the Nuclear and Atomic Physics Department at the University of Notre Dame.
Her application will be submitted for the Georgia Teacher of the Year competition for the 2010-11 school year. Burke and all the school-level winners for Cherokee County will be honored at a banquet in December.
