The Johns Creek City Council has awarded an $853,800 contract to have Lowe Engineers assess public and private stormwater infrastructure in the city.

The action follows an assessment last spring of “a representative sample,” the Long Indian Creek basin, Community Development Director Ben Song said in an agenda report. Only a small percentage of structures and conveyances there required immediate attention, but repairs would cost an estimated $650,000.

The aims of the new, citywide assessment — besides meeting state environmental requirements regarding discharges to state waters, and reducing flooding impacts to property — are to help the council determine future funding, and inform discussions “on the appropriate extent of the city’s portion of the stormwater system,” Song said.

The assessment will follow an “aggressive schedule,” with field work to be completed by the end of January; quality control of data completed by the end of February; a month of data analysis, and staff returning to the council for a full discussion in April, Song said.
