Although he’s just a freshman, Jaycee Horn is making a name for himself at the University of South Carolina and across the Southeastern Conference.

A defensive back for the USC Gamecocks’ football team, Horn --- a graduate of Alpharetta High School --- was named SEC Freshman of the Week by the conference on Monday, for his stellar play this past Saturday in his team’s 37-35 win over Missouri. Horn tallied four pass break-ups and three tackles in USC’s victory over the Tigers.

One of Horn’s tackles came in a turning point in the game, when he forced Damari Crockett out of bounds on an 11-yard reception. Had Crockett beaten Horn on the play, he likely would have scored. The Tigers ended up not scoring on that drive.

Horn is the son of former New Orleans Saints’ wideout Joe Horn and became a four-star prospect while playing for the Alpharetta Raiders. As a senior, he registered 44 tackles and five interceptions as the Raiders went 11-2.

The 6-foot-1 defensive back received scholarship offers from 41 Division I college football teams when he was in high school and initially committed to Tennessee. But when the Vols fired former head coach Butch Jones, Horn opted to reopen his recruitment and ultimately signed with Will Muschamp's Gamecocks.

As a freshman, Horn has been the Gamecocks’ top nickelback on select defensive packages, and he’s also seen work on the outside at cornerback. Through five games, he has 19 tackles, a sack and five pass breakups.

The Gamecocks are 3-2 this season and face No. 22 Texas A&M at home on Saturday.
