A deadly fire over the weekend in East Point was caused by food left unattended on a stove, an investigator determined.
Firefighters discovered the body of John Tatum, 29, in his unit at the Bullock Habersham Apartments on Habersham Drive early Saturday after the fire was brought under control, authorities said.
Crews were sent to the scene just after midnight. Residents already were evacuated and heavy flames were coming from the rear of a two-story brick building with eight apartment units, the fire department said.
According to the fire investigator, the blaze was caused by food left on the stove in Tatum’s apartment.
Twelve adults and three children were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross provided assistance.
