Two people were seriously injured early Thursday when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with a car on I-85 in DeKalb County.

DeKalb police dispatchers received numerous calls starting around 2 a.m. of a car driving north in the southbound lanes of the interstate.

The wrong-way driver, identified  as John Mims, 34, of Cedar Rapids Iowa, collided head on with a Ford Focus driven by a Erin McPherson, 19, of Alpharetta, DeKalb police spokeswoman Lt. Pam Kunz said. The two cars collided  north of Clairmont Road.

Firefighters had to extricate McPherson from her car, Channel 2 Action News reported. She was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition.

Mimms sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Mimms is facing several charges, including reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the roadway and DUI less safe driver, Kunz told the AJC.

All southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours after the accident.
