A Cherokee County horse is OK after being pulled from muddy waters Monday morning.

A team that specializes in large animal rescues was called in to save the male horse from the swamp-like area, said Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.

When the rescue team arrived, they found the horse submerged in water with his head sticking out. Rescuers had to place walking boards around the horse to get close enough to attach a harness around him.

“The mud around the horse makes it more difficult for the rescue team to pull him out because of suction,” Special Operations Chief Darrell Mitchell said.

Air was piped in around the horse to help release him from the suction.

Using the harness, firefighters pulled the horse out of the water and onto a large mat.

The horse was able to stand on all fours and was later checked out by a local veterinarian, Cavender said. He was in stable condition and later returned to his owners.
