A 16-year-old driver was charged with hit-and-run and other offenses Thursday after a head-on collision with a MARTA bus that sent 13 passengers to the hospital.

The driver, whose name was not released because he’s a juvenile, “first hit a red Chevy Equinox and then hit a MARTA bus a little further up the road,” DeKalb County police Maj. Stephen Fore said.

He ran from the scene at North Hairston Road and Memorial Drive but was later taken into custody on charges on failure to maintain lane and driving on the wrong side of the road. He was later released to his mother.

About 13 MARTA passengers were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, MARTA spokeswoman Alisa Jackson said.

The passengers were on bus route No. 121, which covers Stone Mountain and Memorial Drive.
