A Wednesday morning preliminary hearing for three men accused of killing champion boxer Vernon Forrest was pushed back a week.
If they are not indicted in the meantime, Demario Ware, Jquante Crews and Charmon Sinkfield will be in court next Wednesday where the prosecution and a homicide detective will roughly sketch out the evidence that led to their arrests. If there is an indictment, however, there will be no need for the authorities to provide a basis for the charges, which include murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault and gun offenses.
Ware, 20, and Crews, 25, were arrested in the first week of August and Sinkfield, 30, was picked up last Friday.
Police said Ware and Crews robbed Forrest after they saw him and his Jaguar in the parking lot of a south Atlanta convenience store.
Police said Ware approached Forrest just after 11 p.m. July 26 as the boxer was putting air in a rear tire and demanded jewelry and a cell phone. Forrest chased him until Crews picked up Ware and they sped away in a Pontiac Grand Prix, according to the arrest warrant.
Walking back to the convenience store, Forrest saw Sinkfield and they exchanged words, police said.
But Forrest walked away when he realized Sinkfield was not with the men who had robbed him and that was when Forrest was shot in the back several times.
