The Hampton Police Department has been awarded certification by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

An official plaque presentation took place at the Sept. 19 meeting of the City Council. Peachtree City Police Chief Janet Moon presented the plaque to Hampton Police Chief Derrick Austin and Mayor Steve Hutchison.

Austin said later that the certification program sets a total of 129 standards in place — from the hiring process to training procedures and how you wear your uniform, among other areas — so that departments can create policies and document how the standards are being met. Certification is reviewed by the GAPC every three years. It is totally voluntary and not in any way mandated by state government or by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.

The Hampton Police Department has 19 officers along with two civilian personnel on its staff.
