Gwinnett County property tax bills for 2009 — at least the temporary ones — are in the mail, tax Commissioner Katherine Meyer has announced.
The temporary tax bills are required because county commissioners have not set a final millage rate.
On Aug. 13, Superior Court Judge R. Timothy Hamil granted Gwinnett’s request for a temporary collection order for 2009 taxes after legal wrangling between the county and its municipalities to hash out a temporary tax levy. The order permits the county to use the 2008 millage rate of 10.97 and the 2009 tax digest for all residents.
Tax notices are traditionally mailed to property owners in mid-July. They have stalled while the county negotiates a service delivery agreement with its 15 municipalities.
Property owners must pay their temporary tax bills by Nov. 15 to avoid interest and penalty charges. Any difference in the temporary and the final millage rate may result in additional charges or refunds to property owners.
