The holidays are about giving, and that includes the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter.

The shelter is giving free adoptions to all who want them through the end of the year. In return, those who wish to support the shelter can donate items from its holiday wish list.

The shelter had run a free adoption promotion in November, and was so encouraged by the response that it has been extended into December, according to Alan Davis, director of Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement.

All animals are spayed or neutered before they go home with their new owner. They also receive a medical exam, vaccinations and a microchip. As of Dec. 16, there were 106 animals in the shelter's custody, including one Guinea pig named Pretty and two rabbits, Zuri and Emma.

For the holiday season, the shelter is asking supporters for donations of items from its wish list. The list contains items that will help them continue to care for homeless dogs and cats and includes items like old newspapers, classical music CDs and treats for cats and dogs.

Donations can be dropped off at the shelter, located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.

The shelter is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
