The food facility at a Gwinnett County senior living community failed its recent health inspection, with officials noting dented cans and lax employee handwashing.

Brookdale Buford, located at 4450 Old Hamilton Mill Road, received a 48/U on the Tuesday morning inspection.

According to the inspection report, officials found "four cans with end seam dents" and "observed [an] employee place on her hair net then put on gloves without washing her hands to begin making pitchers of lemonade." Another employee was also seen preparing food while wearing a wrist watch.

The inspector also observed chicken that was not cooked to the proper temperature and a thermometer inserted into food without being sanitized.

Brookdale Senior Living Solutions bills itself as "the leading operator of senior living communities throughout the United States." It operates 25 facilities in Georgia, including four in Gwinnett County and several more across the metro Atlanta area.

Spokeswoman Dana Schroering said in an email Wednesday that "all food-related violations cited by the Health Department were corrected on-site during the assessment."

"The safety and wellbeing of our residents are our highest priorities," Schroering wrote. "Recognizing that there may be room for improvement, we take this as an opportunity to retrain associates on policies and procedures. We look forward to welcoming the Health Department back into the community for a follow up inspection."
