Gwinnett County won’t open most of its pools over Memorial Day weekend, but you can still get some laps in if you plan ahead.
The county has opened pools at Bogan Park, Collins Hill Park and Mountain Park Aquatic Center for lap swimming and individual exercise by appointment only, spokesman Joe Sorenson said. Starting the week of May 25, pools at Bethesda Park and West Gwinnett Park will also be available for lap swimming and exercise with appointments. No pool in the county will be open to anyone who has not previously arranged a time to swim.
The pools used for exercise will follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sorenson said. Those include encouraging people to wear face masks when they are not in the pool, providing hygeine supplies including soap and hand sanitizer and regularly cleaning surfaces.
The outdoor leisure pools across the county, which boast attractions including water slides and fountains, do not yet have opening dates. The county’s seven aquatic centers with seasonal schedules typically open during Memorial Day weekend, but will remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The county shut most of its parks and recreation facilities in mid-March when the pandemic emerged in Georgia. That included the five aquatic centers that operate year-round. Restrictions on public pools were lifted May 14, but many cities and counties have hesitated to open to swimmers.
Those who wish to exercise in one of the county’s public pools should contact the facility directly to make an appointment. Contact information for each location is below:
