A Gwinnett Medical Center employee was arrested last week after officials discovered she'd been stealing the same patient belongings she was tasked with keeping safe, police said.
Betsy Marie Wilson, 54, of Lawrenceville was arrested Thursday and charged with three counts of theft by taking and two counts of credit card theft. The latter are felonies and, as of Tuesday afternoon, she remained in the Gwinnett County jail without bond.
According to information released by Lawrenceville police and hospital officials, Wilson was a member of GMC's security staff and her alleged crimes were discovered the day before her arrest. An incident report suggests thefts dated back to 2010, but warrants for Wilson's arrest describe only two incidents — one in May and another in June.
Credit cards, a wallet, cash, jewelry and stamps were among the items reported stolen.
"Recently, GMC learned that someone who was responsible for maintaining personal patient property is alleged to have stolen that property from a holding area," hospital spokeswoman Beth Hardy said in an emailed statement. "As hospital officials take these allegations very seriously, we contacted the Lawrenceville Police Department to work with them."
The investigation is ongoing.
