Firefighters do everything together — train, work, eat, sleep.
And, at least in Gwinnett County, fight cancer.
A few weeks ago, Gwinnett fire recruit Michael Baker was diagnosed with cancer of the groin. He's already had one surgery and will undergo chemotherapy. On July 20, his colleagues from Gwinnett County Fire Recruit Class 2015-2 started a GoFundMe page to help him with medical expenses.
"Since this all started," the page says, "I still haven't seen anything but a smile on his face and a positive attitude. Baker is not just a coworker of ours but he is a brother. He is family and family takes care of each other."
As of Friday morning, the page had raised nearly $5,000.
"I am sure I can speak for Michael Baker himself in saying that he would greatly appreciate any help and support you can offer, although he would probably never ask for it himself," it says.
Gwinnett County fire spokesman said that, while the page is not affiliated with the department itself, they are "hoping and praying for a successful outcome and are providing our support as needed."
